There is so much to see in this world and so little time to explore it all! When you’re trying to plan your holiday, it can be near on impossible to pin down exactly where you want to go. There are so many different types of adventures to enjoy – skiing, sightseeing, climbing, camping and of course, our favourite; snorkeling! But all the possibilities can leave wondering where to visit first – that’s why we’ve produced this handy guide on some of the world’s best beaches for snorkeling to help you decide.
Snorkeling is one of the most popular holiday and travel activities. Whether you’re on your gap year experiencing it for the first time, or a seasoned traveller looking for your next adventure, snorkeling is a fantastic way to see the underwater world, learn about the marine habitat and make some memories that will last a lifetime.
Contrary to popular belief, snorkelling is actually a really safe activity. There are far fewer restrictions in comparison to scuba diving, making it a particularly popular activity for people who are new to it and trying to ease themselves into it slowly. It is also really easy to plan ahead by researching the best beaches for snorkeling before you go and buying any equipment you need in advance. It doesn’t take long to learn and pretty much anyone can snorkel. The rule tends to be if you can swim then you can snorkel! On top of this, it’s a pretty cheap activity too once you’ve bought your snorkeling gear. Nobody charges you to go swimming in the sea after all! BSAC has some really useful guidelines for those wanting to learn more about safe snorkeling.
If you’re big on your marine life, there’s no doubt that snorkelling will appeal to you. It is the perfect opportunity to see turtles, rays and plenty of other absolutely breathtaking sea life up close. Snorkeling offers an opportunity that many of us don’t often get, so it really is worth planning ahead and booking a holiday that offers some of the best beaches for snorkeling in the world.
Where Are The Best Beaches For Snorkeling?
So, you’ve decided you’re all for snorkelling, but where to go? There’s so many beaches, so many options and, as always, some are better than others. Of course, people’s opinions on the best places to snorkel will always vary depending on the individual and it all depends on what you want to experience. However, making a list of the places you really want to get to some day always helps and here’s a few that we think should definitely be included:
Big Island, Hawaii
You know somewhere is good when it’s popular with the locals as well as the tourists. Big Island in Hawaii is one of these places. Kahaluu Beach Park offers some of the best beaches for snorkeling as the ocean is often calm, which is perfect no matter whether you are trying snorkelling for the first time or are a dab hand at it. Here you can hope to see green sea turtles, as well as experience some fantastic views. The black sand beaches are so unique that they certainly make this holiday hot spot stand out, not to mention the photos that you’ll be able to share afterwards!
Bay Islands, Honduras
Have you always dreamed of swimming with sharks, without actually having to go in one of those terrifying cages? If so, Bay Islands, Honduras may be the perfect place to give this a go, as snorkelling in this area means that you can swim with the whopping 40 ft long Whale Shark. Don’t worry, you won’t be recreating Jaws, as Whale Sharks are completely harmless, but you don’t need to tell your friends that when you’re showing off all over Instagram!
Ambergris Caye, Belize
Belize is located on the Caribbean coast of Central America. It boasts the largest barrier reef outside of Australia, making it one of the best beaches for snorkeling in the world. Snorkelling in Belize gives you the chance to see eels, rays and a whole rainbow of tropical fish, as well as the option to visit shark ray alley and play around with some Nurse Sharks too – we reckon it offers plenty of snorkeling for everyone, as well as being the perfect place to work on your tan.
Ilha Grande, Brazil
If seahorses are right up your street, there is no better place to go than Ilha Grande. Situated off the coast of Brazil, this beautiful island looks like a proper desert island and even gives you the chance to channel your inner Captain Jack Sparrow! There are plenty of underwater shipwrecks to explore, and what’s more the snorkeling conditions are usually at their peak no matter time of year you choose to visit.
We reckon these make great starter destinations for snorkeling, but there are plenty of others including Indonesia and California – visiting pretty much any coastal holiday destination means you can give snorkeling a go.
Once you’ve decided where you want to go, the next thing is to decide how you’re going to get there. Usually, you’ll have the option to go snorkeling as part of a tour or just go it alone. Because you don’t need any experience to go snorkeling, lots of people choose to go on their own – so you need to make sure you have the right kit. For snorkeling in warmer waters, you only really need a snorkeling mask and your swimming costume, but it can be daunting trying to decide which mask is right for you.
The Beach Hacks full face snorkeling mask has an anti fog system, a 180-degree view and an anti leak feature, so you don’t have to worry about your mask filling up with water. Priced at $39.99 (about £30), you can even afford it on a student budget too!
If giving snorkeling a go isn’t already on your bucket list, we hope you now feel tempted to add it! Here at Beach Hacks, we’ve all got the snorkeling bug, and we’re pretty sure that after snorkeling with our full face snorkel mask, you’ll get it too!
